2:00 pm: Workshop Title: Seeking Truth through Tension in Memoir Narratives
October 22, 2017 –
Workshop Length: Two hours
Cost: $40 non-members/ $30 members
Facilitator: Melissa Grunow
Registration beginning October 3, 2017
This workshop will facilitate a discussion of fact versus emotional truth in memoir and how to build narratives through conflict and tension to create urgency. We will look at examples of successful memoirs that use voice in different ways for effective story-telling and reflection. Participants will have an opportunity to draft new work with writing prompts to inspire novice writers as well as advanced writers to strengthen their craft.
Facilitator’s Bio: Melissa Grunow is the author of REALIZING RIVER CITY (Tumbleweed Books, 2016) which won Second Place-Nonfiction in the 2016 Independent Author Network Book of the Year Awards. Her work has appeared in Creative Nonfiction, River Teeth, The Nervous Breakdown, New Plains Review, and Blue Lyra Review, among many others. Her essays have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and listed in the Best American Essays 2016 notables. She has an MFA in creative nonfiction with honor’s distinction from National University.
